This glossary entry explains what “GB” means when discussing data usage in mobile or internet service with Nova.
Gigabyte (GB)
GB stands for gigabyte and is a unit of measurement used to indicate how much data you have available, for example, in your Nova subscription.
One gigabyte (1 GB) is equivalent to 1,024 megabytes (MB). If you have a subscription with 10 GB of data, you can send and receive data (such as browsing the internet, watching videos, downloading content) up to that amount each month.
Examples of data usage:
Netflix
- 480p (SD): About 300 MB per hour.
- 720p (HD): About 700 MB per hour.
- 1080p (Full HD): About 3 GB per hour.
- 4K (Ultra HD): About 7 GB per hour.
YouTube
- 480p (SD): About 480–660 MB per hour.
- 720p (HD): About 1.5 GB per hour.
- 1080p (Full HD): About 2.5–4.1 GB per hour.
- 4K (Ultra HD): About 5.5–23 GB per hour, depending on frame rate and content.
Browsing social media or sending photos typically uses much less data; for example, sending one photo by email usually only takes a few MB.
This helps you estimate how far your subscription will go based on your typical usage.
