We started testing 5G in February 2019 and on 5.5.2020, 5G was formally launched at Nova, for the first time in Iceland.
Today, Nova's 5G service area extends to Hella, Sandgerði, Vestmannaeyjar, Selfoss, Reykjanesbær, Grindavík, Garður, Akureyri, Grímsnes, Vogar and Njarðvík and large parts of the capital area.
We are just getting started and will continue to systematically expand our service area where there is a need for increased capacity. Check out Nova's 5G service area.
Part of our plans for future development is that in parallel with the development of 5G, we will start phasing out 3G. No 3G transmitter will be taken down without ensuring that there is a good 4/5G connection in place.
We learned a lot in 2020 in times of bad weather and diseases, not least how important the development of reliable communications systems is, and Nova has invested significantly in infrastructure to stay ahead of the need for increased capacity in the mobile network.
