Due to ongoing earthquake activity in the Reykjanes peninsula and the possibility of volcanic eruption in the vicinity of Fagradalsfjall on the southern side of the peninsula ( ~ 20 km northeast of Grindavik ) we would like to provide the following information to help address any potential concerns.

The Nova network utilizes all available fiber routes on the Reykjanes peninsula, both for primary and backup routes. The main routes follow the Reykjanesbraut highway on the northern side and Suðurstrandarvegur on the southern side. Each is close to the ocean and as distant from the potential source of eruption as possible.

Fiberducts in the ground are highly resistant to earthquake activity and our risk estimate of impact to connectivity due to ongoing earthquake activity is very low risk. Lava flows however pose a significant risk to fiberducts even if underground due to the intense heat involved. Current predictions of potential lava flows indicate that if they do occur they are likely to flow south towards the ocean. This would only impact fiber routes on Suðurstrandarvegur if they reach that location and alternative paths would carry all traffic without impact.

We are monitoring the situation closely and will update with revised risk estimates and any actions taken if there is any further development.
