Mi Box S – Setup and Basic Troubleshooting
Overview
Mi Box S is a TV box that connects to your television with an HDMI cable and lets you download and use apps such as Netflix, YouTube, Spotify and other apps from the Google Play Store.
Setting up Mi Box S
1. Connect the box
Start by connecting Mi Box S to the TV.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the Mi Box S to an HDMI port on the TV.
- Plug the Mi Box S into power.
- Connect an Ethernet cable if you want to use a wired connection and it is available. Otherwise, you can use Wi-Fi.
2. Turn on the TV and select the correct input
- Turn on the TV.
- Select the correct HDMI input using the TV remote.
- The Mi Box S setup screen should appear on the TV.
If nothing appears, check that the correct HDMI input is selected.
3. Connect the box to the internet
During the first setup, you need to select the basic settings.
- Select language.
- Select region.
- Connect the box to Wi-Fi.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password if requested.
4. Sign in to a Google account
To download apps from the Google Play Store, you need to sign in with a Google account.
- Choose to sign in with a Google account.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
- You may be able to use a phone to speed up the setup if that option appears.
5. Review basic settings
After signing in, you can adjust the main settings.
- Date and time are usually set automatically.
- Choose whether to enable or disable Google Assistant.
- Follow any other instructions shown on the screen.
Downloading apps
1. Open Google Play Store
- Go to Google Play Store on the Mi Box S.
- Open the search function.
2. Find the app
Search for the app you want to install, for example:
- Netflix
- YouTube
- Spotify
3. Install the app
- Select the app.
- Click Install.
- Wait for the download and installation to finish.
4. Open the app
Once installation is complete, you can open the app directly or find it on the home screen of the box.
Signing in to apps
Most streaming apps require you to sign in before you can use them.
- Open the app.
- Select sign-in.
- Sign in with your account.
- In some apps, you can use a phone, QR code or website link to speed up sign-in.
- Once sign-in is complete, you can start using the app.
Remote control
The remote control often pairs automatically with the Mi Box S during the initial setup.
If the remote control does not work:
- Check that the batteries are working.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Remotes.
- Select Pair new remote.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
Basic troubleshooting
No picture on the TV
Try the following:
- Check that the TV is set to the correct HDMI input.
- Try another HDMI port on the TV.
- Check that the HDMI cable is properly connected.
- Restart the Mi Box S by unplugging it for about 10 seconds and plugging it back in.
Internet does not work
If the box cannot connect to the internet:
- Check that the Wi-Fi password is correct.
- Restart the router.
- Restart the Mi Box S.
- Go to Settings and reconnect the box to Wi-Fi.
- Try an Ethernet connection if available.
The device is slow
If Mi Box S is slow or lagging:
- Restart the box.
- Close apps running in the background.
- Check for updates in Settings.
- Remove apps that are no longer in use if storage space is low.
Remote control does not work
Try the following:
- Replace the batteries.
- Check that nothing is blocking the connection to the box.
- Pair the remote control again:
- Go to Settings
- Select Remotes
- Select Pair new remote
App does not work
If an app does not open or is not working properly:
- Close the app and open it again.
- Restart the Mi Box S.
- Check whether the app needs an update.
- Sign out of the app and sign in again.
- If nothing works, delete the app and install it again.
No sound
If there is a picture but no sound:
- Check that the TV is not muted.
- Increase the volume on the TV and Mi Box S.
- Go to Settings → Sound and check the sound settings.
- Try another HDMI port.
- Restart the box.
Reset Mi Box S
If nothing else works, you can reset the device.
Note: A reset deletes settings and app sign-ins from the device. After resetting, you need to set up the box again.
To reset:
- Go to Settings.
- Select Device Preferences.
- Select Reset.
- Confirm the reset.
- Follow the setup process again when the device turns back on.
