The internet is slow

If your internet feels slow, the reason may be weak WiFi signal, too many devices online, eero placement, interference, or an issue with the internet connection itself. Here are simple steps to try first.

1. Check if the issue affects all devices or only one device

Start by checking whether the slow connection happens on all devices or only one.

If only one device is slow:

  • Restart the device.
  • Check if the device is far away from the nearest eero.
  • Try moving the device closer to eero.
  • Check if the device is downloading, updating, or running many apps at once.

If all devices are slow:

  • Continue with the steps below.
  • The issue may be related to WiFi coverage, network usage, or the internet connection itself.

2. Run a speed test in the eero app

The speed test in the eero app shows what speed your eero network receives from the internet.

How to run a speed test:

  1. Open the eero app.
  2. Go to Internet or Activity.
  3. Select Speed test.
  4. Tap Run speed test if you want to run a new test.
  5. Review the results.

The speed test usually shows:

Download
The speed used for browsing, streaming, watching videos, and downloading content.

Upload
The speed used when sending data, such as during video calls, file uploads, or cloud services.

If the speed test result is much lower than expected for your internet plan, restart the network and check that your fibre box or internet connection is working normally.

3. Restart the eero network

Restarting can fix temporary issues, for example if the internet is slow, devices disconnect, or the connection behaves unusually.

How to restart the network in the eero app:

  1. Open the eero app.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Open Advanced settings.
  4. Select Restart network.
  5. Confirm the restart.

Your internet connection will be unavailable for a short time while the eero devices restart.

4. Check eero placement

WiFi speed can drop if eero is placed in a poor location.

It is best to place eero:

  • in an open area
  • not inside a cabinet
  • not on the floor
  • not behind a TV or large electronics
  • not too far from other eero devices
  • away from thick walls, concrete, or large metal objects

If you have more than one eero, place them so they have a strong connection to each other. If they are too far apart, speed may be reduced.

5. Check how many devices are connected

The internet can feel slower if many devices are using a lot of bandwidth at the same time.

Examples of things that can slow down the network:

  • 4K streaming
  • gaming
  • large downloads
  • video calls
  • cloud backups
  • many smart home devices
  • guests using the WiFi network

You can view connected devices in the eero app.

How to check devices:

  1. Open the eero app.
  2. Go to Devices.
  3. Review which devices are connected.
  4. Check whether any device seems to be using an unusual amount of internet.

If many devices are online at the same time, it may help to pause large downloads or move important devices closer to eero.

6. Try using a wired connection for important devices

If you use a computer, game console, or TV where speed and stability are important, a wired connection may help.

This is especially useful for:

  • game consoles
  • home office setups
  • TVs or streaming boxes
  • devices far away from eero

Connect the device to eero with an Ethernet cable if possible.

7. Check if WiFi coverage is good enough

If the internet is only slow in one room or one part of the home, the issue may be WiFi coverage.

Common signs of weak WiFi coverage:

  • the connection is good near eero but slow farther away
  • video calls freeze in one room
  • streaming stops in a specific area
  • devices sometimes disconnect from WiFi
  • speed changes depending on where you are in the home

Moving an eero, adding another eero, or using a wired connection may help.

8. If the internet is still slow

If you have tried the steps above and the internet is still slow, contact Nova.

It helps to have this information ready:

  • Is the internet slow everywhere or only in one area?
  • Are all devices slow or only one device?
  • What result do you get from the speed test in the eero app?
  • When did the issue start?
  • Have any new devices recently been added to the network?
  • Has eero or the fibre box recently been moved?
  • Is the eero light white or red?

FAQ

Why do I not always get the same speed over WiFi as my internet plan?

WiFi speed can be lower than the speed coming into the home. Placement, distance from eero, walls, interference, and the number of connected devices can all affect speed.

Why is the internet slow in one room but fine elsewhere?

This often points to weak WiFi coverage in that area. Try moving eero closer, moving the device closer to eero, or adding another eero if needed.

Can many connected devices slow down the internet?

Yes. If many devices are streaming, gaming, downloading, or using video calls at the same time, it can affect speed.

Does restarting eero help?

Yes, sometimes. Restarting can fix temporary issues and is a good first step if the internet is slow or unstable.

When should I contact Nova?

Contact Nova if the speed test in the eero app is repeatedly much lower than expected, if all devices are slow, or if eero shows a red light.
