Device won’t connect to WiFi
If one device will not connect to WiFi, but other devices are working normally, the issue is usually related to that specific device, its location, or how it connects to WiFi.
This can often happen with smart home devices, cameras, printers, doorbells, and older phones or tablets. Some of these devices only support 2.4 GHz WiFi.
Check this first
Before trying more advanced steps, start with this:
- Make sure the device is close to an eero while you connect it for the first time.
- Check that you are selecting the correct WiFi network name.
- Enter the WiFi password again and check uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and special characters.
- Restart the device you are trying to connect.
- Turn WiFi off and back on again on the device.
If the device still will not connect, it may only support 2.4 GHz.
Devices that only support 2.4 GHz
Some devices can only connect to 2.4 GHz WiFi. This often applies to:
- smart home devices
- security cameras
- printers
- doorbells
- older phones or tablets
- some IoT devices
eero normally uses the same WiFi network name for all bands and manages the connection automatically. In most cases this works well, but some 2.4 GHz devices need extra help during the first connection.
How to connect a 2.4 GHz device
- Open the eero app.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Troubleshooting.
- Select My device won’t connect.
- Select My device is 2.4 GHz only.
- Select Pause 5 GHz and 6 GHz.
- Try connecting the device to WiFi again.
This temporarily pauses 5 GHz and 6 GHz so the device can connect to 2.4 GHz.
Once the device is connected, eero will go back to using all bands as normal.
If the device connects but the internet is slow
If the device connects to WiFi but feels slow, try this:
- Move the device closer to an eero.
- Avoid placing the device behind thick walls, metal objects, or large furniture.
- Move the device away from microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors, or other equipment that can interfere with WiFi.
- Restart the device.
- Turn WiFi off and back on again on the device.
If the device stays in one place, such as a printer or camera, it may help to move an eero closer to it or add another eero unit nearby.
If nothing works
If the device still will not connect:
- Check whether the device supports your current WiFi security settings.
- Update the device software if possible.
- Restart your eero network in the eero app.
- Forget the saved WiFi network on the device and connect again.
If the issue continues, contact Nova support and let us know which device will not connect, whether other devices are working, and whether the device only supports 2.4 GHz.
FAQ
Why won’t this device connect if my other devices work?
In that case, the issue is more likely related to the device itself, the WiFi password, the device location, or the device only supporting 2.4 GHz.
Does this turn off my WiFi?
No. When you select Pause 5 GHz and 6 GHz, it is only temporary. It is used to help 2.4 GHz devices connect.
Do I need to change my WiFi name?
Usually not. eero uses one WiFi name and manages the WiFi bands automatically.
Can I use 2.4 GHz devices with eero?
Yes, in most cases. Some devices just need to connect while 5 GHz and 6 GHz are temporarily paused.
