WiFi works poorly in a specific part of the home
If WiFi works well in some rooms but poorly in others, the signal may not be reaching that area strongly enough. This can happen when the device is far from the nearest eero, when walls or floors are in the way, or when the area is difficult for WiFi signals to reach.
Common examples include garages, basements, rooms far away from the router, outdoor areas, or rooms with many walls in between.
Try this first
1. Check if the issue only happens in one area
Try using the same device in another part of the home.
If the connection works well near an eero but poorly in one specific area, the issue is likely related to WiFi coverage or placement.
If the connection is slow or unstable everywhere, the issue may be related to the internet connection itself.
2. Move the device closer to an eero
If you are using a laptop, phone, or tablet, try moving it closer to the nearest eero.
If the connection improves, the WiFi signal is probably too weak in the area where the issue happens.
3. Reconnect the device to WiFi
Sometimes a device may stay connected to an eero that is not the closest one.
Try this:
- Turn WiFi off on the device.
- Wait a few seconds.
- Turn WiFi back on.
- Test the connection again in the same area.
This can help the device reconnect to the closest or best eero in the home.
Check your eero placement
Place eero in an open area
eero works best when placed in an open area, such as on a table, shelf, or cabinet.
Avoid placing eero:
- inside a cupboard
- behind a TV
- on the floor
- near large electronics
- near heaters or direct sunlight
- behind thick walls or large furniture
Do not place eeros too far apart
If you have more than one eero, they need to have a good connection to each other.
If an additional eero is placed too far away from the main eero, it may receive a weak signal and pass that weak connection on.
A good rule is to place the additional eero between the main eero and the area with poor WiFi, not all the way inside the dead zone.
Things that can affect WiFi
WiFi signals can be weakened or interrupted by:
- concrete walls
- brick walls
- floors between levels
- large mirrors
- metal
- dense building materials
- microwaves
- baby monitors
- cordless phones
- many nearby WiFi networks in apartment buildings
In some cases, moving an eero slightly, even by a few metres, can improve the connection.
If the issue is in a basement, garage, or far room
These areas are often more difficult for WiFi because of distance, walls, or building materials.
Try to:
- Move an eero closer to the area.
- Place an additional eero between the main eero and the problem area.
- Avoid placing eero on the floor or inside a closed space.
- Test the device again after moving the eero.
If you need strong WiFi in that area for a home office, gaming console, or TV, you may need an additional eero to improve coverage.
Restart the network if the issue continues
If the placement looks fine but WiFi is still unstable, it can help to restart the network in the eero app.
To do this:
- Open the eero app.
- Go to Settings.
- Select Advanced settings.
- Select Restart network.
- Wait for the network to come back online.
The internet connection will disconnect briefly while the network restarts.
When should I add another eero?
Adding another eero may help if:
- WiFi works poorly in the same area even after moving your current eero
- the home has more than one floor
- the walls are thick or made of concrete
- the issue is in a garage, basement, or far room
- many devices are online at the same time
- you need a stable connection for work, streaming, or gaming in that area
eero is a mesh system, which means multiple eero devices can work together to improve WiFi coverage throughout the home.
FAQ
Why does WiFi work well in the living room but poorly in one bedroom?
The WiFi signal is probably weaker in that room. This can happen because of distance from eero, walls, floors, or other obstacles.
Can moving eero help?
Yes. eero should be placed in an open area and should not be hidden inside a cupboard, behind a TV, or near large electronics.
Should I place an extra eero directly in the area where WiFi is poor?
Not always. It is often better to place the extra eero between the main eero and the problem area. That way, it can get a stronger signal and pass it on.
Can one device be the problem?
Yes. If only one device has poor WiFi, try turning WiFi off and on again on the device, restarting the device, and testing it in another area.
When should I contact Nova?
Contact Nova if WiFi still works poorly in the same area after you have tried moving eero, reconnecting the device, and restarting the network. We can help check whether placement, the number of eero devices, or something else may be affecting the connection.
